Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606- 1669) was a Dutch painter and print maker highly successful and famous during Holland's Golden Age. In the course of the Romantic era he was considered a forerunner of the Romantic Movement and from that point he was regarded as one of the greatest painters in art History. Rembrandt is known for uncompromising realism and as a painter of light and shade. Roughly one-tenth of his work consists of studies of his own self-portraits.
