Pieter Claesz (1597- 1660) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of still life. He founded a distinguished tradition of still life painting in Holland, Influenced by the 'Vanitas' movement, Claesz work often portrayed luxurious objects, skulls tipped glass, or cracked walnut to symbolically remind the viewer of the relativity of time, futility of pleasure, and the inevitable predestined death.
